When does the holiday season start in downtown Coeur d'Alene? On the 2026 calendar, it starts Friday, Nov. 6, when skaters take the ice at McEuen Park. That's three weeks before the switch flips at The Coeur d'Alene Resort.
Those three weeks are the most useful part of the season. That's when the North Pole cruises are cheapest and parking rules are normal. The busiest single evening of the year is still ahead.
This year's switch-on is Friday, Nov. 27, a day earlier on the calendar than the Nov. 28 kickoff the Coeur d'Alene Press reported for 2025.
The 2026 calendar, start to finish
Here's the season in order, using the organizers' own published dates:
- Nov. 6: CDA On Ice opens at McEuen Park for a season that runs through Jan. 18, 2027.
- Nov. 7: Wine for the Holidays, from 1 to 6 p.m. downtown.
- Nov. 13 to 25: Santa's Sneak Peek Week cruises at 25% off.
- Nov. 26: Regular-season North Pole cruises begin.
- Nov. 27: The Lighting Ceremony Parade, fireworks and switch-on. The Resort's "My Favorite Things" Christmas Show opens the same night.
- Nov. 28: The Elf On The Shelf scavenger hunt begins and runs through Dec. 20.
- Dec. 5: Free Santa photos at STCU's downtown branch.
- Dec. 13: Breakfast with Santa at the Hagadone Event Center.
- Jan. 3, 2027: Last North Pole cruise of the season.
The first four entries all come before the switch-on, and they set up everything after it.
McEuen Park and Sherman Avenue open the season
CDA On Ice returns to McEuen Park on Nov. 6 and runs through Jan. 18, 2027. That's more than ten weeks of skating, starting three weeks before the lights and continuing two weeks after the last cruise sails. Sessions on the rink's ticket calendar are 90 minutes long. Reservations are made online, and the rink warns it may close to the public for private events, so check the calendar before you head to the park.
The next afternoon, Saturday, Nov. 7, the Downtown Association holds Wine for the Holidays from 1 to 6 p.m. Check-in is at the Plaza Shops, 210 E. Sherman Ave. Presale tickets are $25 for eight one-ounce tastings and a commemorative glass. A limited number of door tickets sell for $30, and attendees must be 21 or older. The event is built around a walk through the downtown shops, three weeks before the parade weekend.
Parking is still on its normal schedule that weekend. The City of Coeur d'Alene lists downtown on-street parking as free for two hours, with rates in public lots that vary.
The cheapest North Pole cruise sails before the switch-on
Coeur d'Alene Cruises calls Nov. 13 through 25 Santa's Sneak Peek Week. It's the same 40-minute cruise to Santa's North Pole, with the same four departures each evening, at 25% off. The operator pitches the window as a way to "skip the crowds," and the price difference is easy to see side by side:
| Cruise | Dates | Length | Adult | Senior 55+ | Youth 6–12 | 5 and under |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sneak Peek Week | Nov. 13–25 | 40 min | $23.50 | $22.75 | $12.00 | Free |
| Regular season | Nov. 26–Jan. 3 | 40 min | $30.50 | $29.50 | $15.00 | Free |
| Lighting Ceremony | Nov. 27 only | 90 min | $49.25 | n/a | $38.25 | Free |
For two adults and two children ages 6 to 12, that works out to $71 during Sneak Peek Week and $91 at the regular prices. The gap may be wider than $20. The operator says the Sneak Peek prices include taxes and fees, and the regular-season prices aren't labeled either way. The discount can't be combined with other offers.
Sneak Peek and regular-season cruises sail at 4:30, 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Boarding starts 30 minutes before departure inside the Resort Plaza Shops at 115 S. 2nd St. A regular-season ticket includes the lake crossing, a visit with Santa, Mrs. Claus and their helpers, and the moment when Santa reads each child's name from the Nice List. The regular season itself runs Nov. 26 through Jan. 3, 2027. Last year's listing on Visit Coeur d'Alene ran Nov. 27, 2025, through Jan. 1, 2026, so this season starts a day earlier and ends two days later.
Nov. 27 runs on a clock
The switch-on is the one night of the season that depends on timing. The Downtown Association has published the 34th Annual Lighting Ceremony Parade, presented by STCU, with a 2026 theme of "Santa's Workshop." Here's how the afternoon and evening unfold, based on the parade page:
- By 1 p.m.: All cars must be off Sherman Avenue.
- 3 p.m.: Sherman closes between Northwest Boulevard and 8th Street.
- 4 p.m.: Barricades go up. Drivers still downtown should plan to leave by 4th or 7th Street.
- 4 and 5 p.m.: Boarding for the two Lighting Ceremony cruises, which depart at 5 and 5:30 p.m.
- 5 p.m.: The parade steps off at 8th and Sherman and heads west on Sherman to Government Way and Northwest Boulevard.
- After the parade: Carols on The Coeur d'Alene Resort lawn, a countdown, fireworks courtesy of the Hagadone Corporation, then the switch that lights more than 1.5 million bulbs downtown.
No set time has been posted for the fireworks. The Downtown Association says they directly follow the parade, which is scheduled for 5 to 6 p.m.
The Lighting Ceremony cruises are a different product from the regular 40-minute trips. They run 90 minutes, include a North Pole visit, and come with what the operator calls front-row fireworks viewing from the water. At $49.25 per adult, they cost about twice as much as a Sneak Peek ticket. With only two sailings, they're the scarcest tickets of the season.
The same evening, the Resort's "My Favorite Things" Christmas Show opens. It runs through Dec. 20, with 7 p.m. performances on Thursdays and Fridays and 5 p.m. performances on Saturdays and Sundays. The Resort calls it an annual show, but there's something new this year. The 2026 production will include one Coeur d'Alene Christmas memory chosen by the community.
December fills in around the lights
The day after the switch-on, the Downtown Association starts its free Elf On The Shelf scavenger hunt, which runs Nov. 28 through Dec. 20. On Saturday, Dec. 5, as part of the hunt, Santa sits for free photos at STCU's downtown branch, 401 E. Front Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A low-sensory photo time runs from 9:30 to 10 a.m., before the main line forms.
The Coeur d'Alene Resort holds Breakfast with Santa on Sunday, Dec. 13, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Hagadone Event Center. Tickets are $75 for ages 13 and up and $45 for ages 12 and under, plus tax and fees.
The December events stay on Front Avenue, Sherman Avenue and at the Resort, just like the November ones. Once Sherman reopens after the parade, the free two-hour on-street parking makes a short evening downtown easy to plan. Last season, the Coeur d'Alene Press reported that the lights stayed on through Jan. 5. No end date for 2026 has been posted yet, but the North Pole cruises run through Jan. 3 and the rink stays open until Jan. 18.
Prices and availability can change, so check each organizer's page before you buy tickets.
I grew up in North Idaho with these lights, and I still pay attention to which downtown blocks stay within an easy walk of Sherman Avenue all winter. If you're thinking about a home near the lake, the parade route or McEuen Park, Darren Miller can walk you through how those streets work in December as well as in July. Let's Connect.
